Hangar 4

From Officer Candidates School to squadron Commanding Officer, Isaac G. Lee, Lieutenant Colonel USMC (Ret.), reached the finish line at Hangar 4 on MCAS Miramar at the conclusion of seven deployments during his two decades of service. In his memoir, he shares the lessons, the rewards, the losses, and, ultimately, the personal cost.

Isaac pushed every boundary he encountered as a combat aviator, repeatedly testing his own mettle under harsh wartime conditions. He sets a high standard in Hangar 4 with his candid accounting of a transformative journey that took place while he endeavored to balance life in the squadron, in the cockpit, in war zones, and at home.

Isaac G. Lee

Isaac G. Lee grew up in Lubbock, Texas. A graduate of Texas Tech University, he departed for Marine Corps Officer Candidates School in the summer of 1997. His two decades as an officer and aviator resulted in seven overseas deployments, which included four combat tours of duty in the Middle East. The veteran combat aviator served as the Commanding Officer of an operational CH-53E squadron prior to his retirement from the Marine Corps in 2017.

Isaac and his family reside in San Diego, California, where he works as an operations executive. When he isn’t volunteering to help his fellow veterans, he spends his free time with loved ones, and enjoys baseball and football. HANGAR 4 is his first book.

“Hangar 4 takes readers on a candid journey that expertly captures the physical, mental, and emotional demands of two decades of service as a combat aviator. A must-read from one of the best assault support pilots of our generation.”

Chris Roy, Colonel, United States Marine Corps, USMC CH-53E Combat Veteran

Praise for Hangar 4

“Hangar 4 is an intimate look into the life of a professional warrior striving to balance duty with family over two decades of war. Highly recommended for anyone interested in leadership, what it means to serve, and the nitty gritty of life in a Marine Corps helicopter squadron at war.”

Dan Sheehan, Author of After Action and Continuing Actions, USMC AH-1W Combat Veteran

“A warrior's tale of modern helicopter warfare: insightful, articulate, and raw. It tells the story for my generation in the way that Chicken Hawk and Bonnie Sue did for Vietnam-era combat aviators. Required reading for every military professional and military history buff.”

John Ruffini, President of PopASmoke, USMC Combat Helicopter and Tiltrotor Association, USMC CH-53E Combat Veteran

“An extraordinary account of Marine Corps aviation during the Global War on Terror. Isaac Lee’s memoir will impact those who served and those far removed from America’s wars. His remarkable combat service lends particular credibility to the importance of family and successful transition.”
